The Burren Smokehouse is an Irish family-run producer of Smoked fish. The company was established in 1989 by Peter and Birgitta Curtin and it is located close to Lisdoonvarna. The Burren Smokehouse started with the smoking and curing of salmon. Later they branched out into mackerel, trout and eel.

Cheese was later added to their impressive repertoire. The Smokhouse now also stocks excellent fruit wines made locally by 'Wine of the Glen',

According to "Good Food Ireland" the Burren Smokehouse is a "highly acclaimed, award winning traditional smokehouse". This is a well deserved accolade as they have won many awards and were one of the suppliers for the State Banquet during the visit of Queen Elizabeth II and The Duke of Edinburgh to Ireland in May 2011.

The company also operates a visitor centre which was opened in 1995 and is rapidly becoming one of the bigger tourism attractions in the area welcoming over 30,000 visitors from all over the world each year. The Visitors Centre was established to create a window for their own products and other local gourmet foods and crafts.

You can call into the Burren Smokehouse Visitor Centre and get a tasting of their Burren Smoked Salmon. You can discover mosaics inside and outside the shop featuring a series of mosaics depicting the famous legend of Fionn McCool and the Salmon of Knowledge. You also get a look at the first kiln that was used when Peter and Birgitta first set up the Burren Smokehouse.

You can get a tasting of their smoked salmon and watch a DVD presentation about the smoking process which is free of charge. Feel free to ask any questions you may have and they will be happy to answer them for you. They offer a worldwide mail order service from their wide range of products and you can have it shipped to yourself or your friends and family as a souvenir from Ireland. "Not wanting to do the typical "bus tour" of Ireland, and not wanting to drive on the left, I booked a tour with Ireland West Tours. We hiked to remote churches, visited little known Tower houses/castles...all things that our amazing guide, Paul, was able to recommend. This was worth every single penny."
